There are more than 600 castles in Wales, there is so much heritage and history to be explored here.


Snowdonia is home to many castles of different ages. The majority of the castles are in good enough condition to walk in and explore and usually have guided tours available or labelled information boxes informing you all about the history of the castle.



A trip to the castle is very educational and really gives you a clear view on what life might of been like hundreds of years ago.



Here are the top 3 castles in Snowdonia.


1. Caernarfon Castle


Caernarfon Castle is known around the world and recognised as one of the greatest buildings of the middle ages, taking 47 years to build!


There's no doubt that Caernarfon Castle is the biggest and most impressive castle in Snowdonia. Located on the banks of the River Seiont, with easy access to water and the sea, the castle was built in a practical spot for King Edward I.

You can enter the castle after purchasing tickets, this also includes entry to the museum inside of the castle. The castle has a café, giftshop and parking available.



2. Conwy Castle


Conwy castle is one of the most magnificent and finely kept medieval fortresses in Europe built between 1283 and 1287.


The restorations of the spiral stairs mean you can access the whole loop around the battlements of the castle, the castle is one of the best preserved castles that impresses as much as it did 700 year ago.

3. Harlech Castle


Harlech castle is well known for its fascinating positioning, once located on the coastline 700 years later it is now 1km in land on the high cliff face overlooking the town and dunes below.


Harlech was King Edward's cheapest castle and only took 7 years to build. Though this does not make it any less impressive.

The castle could once be accessed via the sea, it's unique walls within walls architecture made it almost impossible to invade.


The castle has a gift shop, café, parking and exhibition. Harlech beach is also worth a visit whilst you are visiting the castle.
